Online November 17-19, 2021

Welcome, dear friends. Every synod is significant as a diocese but this year is very special because we will gather for an Electoral Synod. As well as all the regular aspects of Synod, our voting members will prayerfully elect a new Co-Adjutor Diocesan Bishop on November 18th.

As we continue to navigate a world impacted by COVID-19 our Synod will once again be held online. Although we will miss out on being together in person, it does mean that no matter where we are in the country we can connect, participate and move forward as a diocese.

We are full of hope and faith for what the Lord is doing in the Anglican Network in Canada and thankful for each of our churches and members.

Theme

Our theme verses this year are Hebrews 13:20-21:

“Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.”

Join us in praying these verses as we prepare for Synod. Pray with us that our great God of peace will indeed shepherd us, equip us, and be glorified in every way in our Synod together.

 How We’ll Gather

Synod 2021 will be held using the Zoom video meeting service and will be live-streamed for observers on our YouTube Channel. For delegates we will provide many more details after your registration and as the event approaches including orientation meetings before Synod to ensure all delegates know how to enter the meeting, vote, ask questions and more.

Each voting member of Synod (an active clergy person or official delegate from your congregation) will need to be able to connect individually to the Zoom meeting using a computer, tablet or smartphone and relatively good internet speeds. If you’re able to watch video or use Zoom normally that’s all you should require. Delegates who do not have these capabilities should contact their parish leadership for guidance.

Again more specific details and instructions will be provided to voting members of Synod after their registration.

  • Unlike past years, observers do not need to register. Synod will be streamed live online and available to anyone who wishes to watch.

  • Voting members, however, must register so they can join the meeting and vote on any motions and elections.

Agenda

This year our Synod agenda will be similar to last year’s online synod with one primary difference. This year is an Electoral Synod and so on Thursday, November 18th we will hold a vote for the election of a Co-Adjutor Bishop. The election process could be quick or it could take more time if we need multiple ballots, so our schedule for Thursday and beyond will have to be flexible.

Times:

The plan is for Synod to consist of three days of meetings. We intend that each day will span approximately 3 hours, running from 1pm–4pm Eastern (2:30pm–5:30pm NFLD, 10:00am–1:00pm Pacific). Again the length of Thursday’s gathering may vary depending on how the episcopal election progresses.

Bible Teaching

Rev. Keith Ganzer

During Synod the Reverend Keith Ganzer will be with us to bring the Bible teaching on Wednesday and Friday. Keith is the rector of Christ the King in Toronto. He will be teaching from the book of Hebrews and focusing in particular on our theme verses of Hebrews 13:20-21.

Here’s a little about Keith:

Keith has been the rector of Christ the King Anglican Church in Toronto since the fall of 2015. His life of faith began in his hometown in northwestern Pennsylvania, where he became a follower of Jesus in high school through hearing sermons from the gospel of Mark at a local Baptist church. Keith studied ancient languages and biblical exegesis at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois, and then moved to Vancouver with his wife Emily, where he completed a M.Div. degree at Regent College.

After graduating from Regent, Keith was ordained in the Anglican Network in Canada and served as the curate at St. John’s Vancouver Anglican Church. In 2011, Keith and Emily moved with their new daughter to Montreal, where Keith served as the rector of Emmaus Anglican Church. A second daughter was born in Montreal. Keith and Emily are now permanent residents of Canada and homeschool their daughters.

Keith’s primary passion in ministry is the study and preaching of the Scriptures, since it is his belief that the Word of God, by the Spirit, changes people. But besides dead languages and the Bible, Keith is interested in many kinds of music and at one time learned to play the pipe organ. He enjoys reading – especially historical biographies – and exploring the urban landscape of Toronto, but mostly, life as a father joyfully fills his days.
