  Order of St Joseph’s Guilds

Fledgling guilds of ACNA craftsmen, artisans and those in the building trades, created for the sharing of ideas, experiences and information on the construction of churches and furnishings. These guilds would then work together, offering their volunteer help to congregations in need.

Scriptural foundation
The Lord said to Moses, “See, I have called by name Bezalel… and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with ability and intelligence, with knowledge and all craftsmanship, to devise artistic designs, to work in gold, silver, and bronze, in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, to work in every craft. And behold, I have appointed with him Oholiab… And I have given to all able men ability, that they may make all that I have commanded you...”

Exodus 31:1-6

The Need
When congregations realign with the Anglican Church in North America, they often leave not just their building, but also all the furnishings. This was the case when the people of Church of the Epiphany (Hamilton, ON, Canada) left the Anglican Church of Canada; they left “naked” and many parishioners were concerned about the lack of familiar church furnishings.

A Vision is Born
To meet Church of the Epiphany’s need, the Revd St Clair Cleveland, a trained craftsman, designed portable church furnishings which he jokingly called “church in a box”.

With this experience was born the idea for organizing crafts people across ACNA to meet the needs of congregations which have had to leave their church furnishings behind.
Now God has laid it on my heart to bring together crafts people from across ACNA, forming guilds to help clothe “naked” parishes

Proposal
The Rev Cleveland now hopes to connect with interested ACNA craftsmen throughout North America to develop guilds of artisans and those in the building trades for the sharing of ideas, experiences and information on the construction of churches and furnishings. These guilds would then work together, offering their volunteer help to congregations in need.
