  The Elements of Leadership

Recently Bishop Paul Andre Durocher, Auxiliary Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie, with special responsibility for francophone congregations and native ministries, had a conversation with our Archdeacons on the subject of leadership. He has recently been doing a lot of reading and workshops on the subject. He identified the five following elements of leadership.

1)
Mission
All organizations need a clearly defined mission. Christ’s words and commands give a clear focus to the Church for its mission. Effective leadership will share that sense of mission with passion and enthusiasm.

2)
Vision
The overall vision of the Church is the Kingdom of Heaven. How do we translate that vision into our circumstances, setting and culture? How do we enunciate it in such a way that others feel committed and inspired?

3)
Empowerment
Effective leaders help others to come forward and make rewarding and worthwhile

Accomplishments. As this process of growth and accomplishment unfolds there are always new learnings, new insights and new friendships resulting. As the process of empowerment unfolds, fresh energies are released.

4)
Embodiment
Effective leaders embody what they proclaim. They are humble and approachable exemplars of the new lifestyle they advocate. Embodiment is the successful testing of both the lifestyle and the messenger. Embodiment is the proof of authenticity.

5)
Celebration
Effective leaders do not just ask others to strive for goals, they also help others to celebrate their achievements and their mission. Worthwhile accomplishments are connected to spiritual joy. Celebration flows naturally from those who are growing, achieving, learning, and collaborating on their highest values.
