ANiC Ordination Process

Parish Discernment Process

1. A two year minimum discernment process is expected.

2. Each Parish will appoint a Discernment committee (usually 4-5 )

a. Areas to cover in gift selection: theological acumen; Psychological; discernment gifts long term parish members, Wardens, youth rep.)

b. Annual meeting date September, for first interview with candidate and spouse on separate occasions.

c. Identification of ministry activities in the parish and beyond which will afford the parish the opportunity to discern a call to ministry. A ministry plan is now operationalised for a minimum of 12 months.

d. Second interview September of the following year for mid course correction and feedback.

e. January following the parish is given a questionnaire to evaluate the strengths weaknesses and potential calling of the Candidate

f. Prior to Easter the results are tabulated summarized and presented to the Candidate with a recommendation to Parish Council for their approval.

g. Parish Council or the rector sends the recommendation to the ANiC Regional Bishop’s Chaplain.


Candidate meets with regional Chaplain

1. Outcomes:

a. Chaplain recommends the Candidate to the Bishop for further discernment
Chaplain sends the Candidate to the Regional Discernment Committee

b. Chaplain does not discern a call to Ordination and works with the Candidate to redirect the vision for future ministry

c. Chaplain recommends the Candidate to further preparation with a timeline for returning to meet again.
Interview with the Moderator and or regional Bishop (when appointed in due course)

1. Outcomes:

a. Discerns a call and refers thee Candidate to the Regional Discernment Committee

b. If the Candidate has already meet with the RDC, and the Bishop also affirms the call to Ordination, a course of Theological study is mandated

c. The Bishop does not recommend the Candidate to proceed

d. The Bishops recommends a delay in the process to clarify certain questions and uncertainties pertaining to the call


National Discernment Committee

1. This is a possible way forward in years to come as the organization grows and standardization is needed.

2. In the meantime it is recommended that a member of the Eastern Committee (or conversely the Western) be in attendance at the Western Discernment committee meeting.


Post Diaconate

1. 3-4 goals Rector of supportive church

2. Evaluation at 3-4 month time. Evaluation sent to Bishop

3. Final evaluation, by rector with recommendation sent to Bishop
